Brie-lieve It or Not, It’s National Cheese Day in France!

The AXA Marthon team share their favourite cheeses

27 Mar 2024

Fête du Fromage! Yes, 27 March is National Cheese Day in France – la Journée nationale du fromage. To celebrate the event, we spoke to Florent (Agent Général), Karine and Virginie at AXA Marthon insurance agency to ask them what their favourite cheeses are – and why.

There are an estimated 1,200 different types of cheese produced in France – across all regions. Soft cheeses such as Brie and Camembert known for their creamy texture and delicate flavour; strong and pungent cheeses like Roquefort and Bleu d’Auvergne; as well as nutty and fruity varieties, for example Comté. No doubt you have your own favourites… but what about the AXA Marthon team?

Florent: I am a huge fan of St Félicien because it’s very creamy and delicious! This cheese originates from the Ardèche, and you’ll often see it at the cheese markets in Lyon where I used to live.

St Félicien is made from cow’s milk; however I enjoy eating goats cheese as well. Our local produce here in the Charente is hard to beat!

Karine: I really like Mimolette, a hard, fruity cheese, and I love Pyrenean ewe’s milk cheese for its strong flavour.

The best cheese in the Charente is Taupinette, a fresh goat’s cheese from the Chèvrerie Jousseaume dairy, which has won a medal at the Salon de l’Agriculture. It has a fabulous taste.

Virginie: Cantal is my go-to cheese! I prefer the milder cheeses and it can be also fruity.

I like to buy local cheeses, and a particular favourite is Le Manslois. Here, it enjoys great popularity for its hazelnut flavour and is a great addition in both savoury and sweet dishes.

Thank you everyone! Bon Appetit.
