Tuesday 16 January 2024 was a significant day for British citizens living in France – and indeed, throughout the world. Britons living abroad can now vote again in UK Parliamentary elections even if they have lived overseas for longer than 15 years.

Until this year, non-UK resident citizens who have lived abroad for a period of more than 15 years lost their right to vote. With an estimated 3.5 million Britons living overseas, the campaign to reverse this decision will have a major impact on the size of the UK voting franchise.

The UK Parliament approved legislation last year which came into effect in January. Now, Britons across the globe can register online to vote – with the next UK General Election scheduled for this year.

Why should people vote in the UK even if they live abroad?

Here are several reasons why you should vote:

§  Voting is a basic human right – and if you do not have French dual nationality (or perhaps another nationality) you are unlikely to have a vote in any elections. This change will allow you to do so.

§  Pensions: Decisions made by the UK government affect Britons living abroad including pensions.

§  Families and friends living in the UK: Voting is your opportunity to give your view on public services and how the country is governed.

§  Relocating back to the UK: If you are planning to go to the UK at some point in the future, the right to vote will help to retain your connection.

What do British citizens now need to do to register?

You will find the UK government link to register for voting here. The website states that you can use this service to register to vote if you’re a British citizen. You may need your UK passport details.
