Explore France’s under estimated destinations
A look at three of France’s lesser-known places to visit

In 2024 France welcomed more than 100 million international visitors, thanks to the Paris Olympics and the post-pandemic recovery in tourism. There are so many things that people love to see and do in France, and of course there are plenty of sightseeing attractions…it’s impossible to list them all. However, there are places in France which are much less popular for tourism yet are well worth visiting. Let’s share a few with you – but shhh! – please don’t tell everyone!
1. Finistère, Brittany. Finistère translated literally into English means ‘end of the earth’ – but don’t let that put you off! On France’s far western Atlantic coast, Finistère offers dramatic coastline, charming fishing villages, a rich Breton culture and much more. Pont-Aven is a pretty town which inspired the impressionist painters, including Paul Gaugin; today you can visit its art galleries and the Musée de Pont-Aven. Finistère is arguably Brittany’s most rugged, and beautiful department.
2. Pornic, Loire-Atlantique. Staying on the Atlantic coastline but heading further south is the appealing port of Pornic. Nestled along the scenic Jade Coast, Pornic offers a delightful blend of maritime charm with its port, sandy beaches, and thalassotherapy centres. Explore its medieval castle perched above the harbour and savour fresh seafood while soaking in the invigorating Atlantic air. You can also enjoy a day trip to nearby Nantes. What’s not to love?
3. Saint Etienne de Baïgorry, Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Situated in the southwestern corner of France, Saint-Étienne-de-Baïgorry lies in the heart of the French Basque country, nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenées Mountains and close to the Spanish border. There’s plenty to do: picturesque walks, a selection of cafés and restaurants. Furthermore, the Baïgorri valley is known for its gastronomy, such as Ossau-Iraty sheep’s cheese, cured meats, the famous Irouléguy wine and chocolate. The simplicity and the beauty of the area make this a truly special place.
We hope that this has inspired you to discover some of France’s lesser known yet delightful places.
