If you are moving to France, bringing your car across the Channel is a key consideration for many. However, if you stay longer than 6 months, you must formally register your vehicle in France and obtain a French registration number.

Importing a car to France involves several steps, including vehicle eligibility checks, customs clearance, technical inspections, and registration. The cost of bringing a car into France can be high, particularly if you own a high value vehicle. Therefore, it is important to understand the essential requirements; read on to follow our top tips.

§   Vehicle eligibility requirements

Any car imported into France must comply with EU safety and environmental standards, such as those related to emissions, safety and the age of vehicle. Generally speaking, newer vehicles with lower emission ratings are easier to import.

§  The import process and key documents

Initial steps include arranging the transport and customs procedures, including paying any import duties and VAT. Note that VAT due can vary depending on whether you are importing a collector’s car or a modern vehicle.

Bringing across your vehicle means that there will be a lot of paperwork to manage: you will need to provide to authorities proof of purchase, obtain a Certificate of Conformity, as well as a customs declaration.

For importing documents from within Europe, a crucial document is the Quitus Fiscal; this is a French tax certificate confirming that a vehicle is tax-compliant and eligible for registration in France.

In addition, all cars and other vehicles must undergo a mandatory technical inspection (Contrôle Technique) to verify the vehicle’s roadworthiness.

Once all these steps are complete, owners can obtain a French registration certificate (Carte Grise) from the relevant authorities.

§  Insurance requirements

Comprehensive car insurance is essential for imported vehicles, covering third-party liability, collision damage, theft, and personal injury. AXA Marthon insurance agency can help you secure the appropriate cover tailored to your specific needs and ensure compliance with French regulations, including classic cars.

Completing the import process can take several months – so make sure you plan accordingly. Specialist companies can provide support, and there is also a Facebook group which can give useful information.
