Unbound travel: buying a camping car in France
Key considerations before you hit the road with your motorhome

The French passion for la liberté finds its perfect expression in the rise of camping cars in France, as well as across Europe. The growing popularity of road trips and ‘slow tourism’ has resulted in healthy sales in France for both new and used campervans and motorhomes, with 610,000 registered vehicles in 2024[1]. So, if you are thinking about buying a camping car or motorhome for the first time, this article will give you a few things to consider.
The different types of camping car
Camping cars is a general term which encompasses a range of vehicle types, from compact and agile campervans, ideal for flexible road trips; to larger, more luxurious motorhomes, offering comprehensive onboard amenities and spacious living areas, as well as the capucine with over cab sleeping areas.
Exploring France at your own pace
Whatever camping car you go for, it isn’t difficult to understand why France is so suited to camping cars, with its comprehensive road network (over one million kilometres!) and varied landscapes. From the sun-drenched French Riviera to the fairytale châteaux of the Loire Valley and the majestic peaks of the Alps, there is much to entice the leisure traveller to explore.
When planning your route and potential stopovers, search for ‘aires de camping-car’. These provide parking for self-contained motorhomes – and there are more than 2000 aires through France which make suitable night stops all year round, with access to basic facilities. Unlike campsites, few close for the winter too. Generally, you can park at a local authority aire for 24-72 hours.
Essential Camping Car considerations
§ Driving licences:
It’s important to check your driving licence before purchasing a camping car. In France, most campervans fall under the autocaravane classification, allowing operation with a standard B or B1 licence for vehicles up to 3,500kg. Larger vehicles, up to 7,500kg, require a C1 licence. UK licences issued before 1997 typically include C1, but this entitlement expires at age 70. French residents holding such UK licences must exchange them for French ones, which requires a medical examination to retain the C1 category.
§ Choosing the right type of camping car:
When choosing a camping car, carefully consider your travel style and the number of passengers, for example is it for all the family, yourself or for a couple? This will determine the necessary size and layout, ensuring comfortable living and adequate storage for your travels.
In addition, prioritise essential features like a functional kitchen, comfortable sleeping arrangements, and sufficient water and power capacities, while also factoring in the vehicle’s manoeuvrability and fuel efficiency for your intended destinations.
§ Budget:
Initial Purchase: For budget-conscious travellers, campervans offer a more accessible entry point, while those seeking extensive amenities should anticipate significantly higher costs for motorhomes, with luxury models demanding a substantial investment – sometimes exceeding 100,000€. Buying a used vehicle as opposed to a new camping car is obviously a potential option for those on a smaller budget.
Ongoing Expenses: Beyond the vehicle itself, factor in insurance, fuel, maintenance, potential toll road fees, and campsite costs, with these variables fluctuating based on travel frequency and chosen amenities.
§ Insurance:
Comprehensive insurance tailored to the specific needs of a camping car or motorhome is crucial, as policies should account for the vehicle’s size, contents, and intended usage, including cover for European travel as well as potential on-site risks.
AXA offers a comprehensive insurance package for all types of campervans and motorhomes. The cover includes protection of personal belongings against theft via break-in, and assistance services for accidents occurring over 30km from the insured’s residence.
