What is La Toussaint and why is it celebrated in France?
The 1st November – La Toussaint, known as All Saints’ Day in English, is an important day in the French calendar.
Chrysanthemum flowers of many different colours fill the flower shops and supermarkets.
La Toussaint is marked by special church services to honour church saints and martyrs. People will visit cemeteries, where they clean and decorate the graves of their loved ones. Flowers and candles create a serene and respectful environment.
However, it is not only about religious observance. Families get together to celebrate the memories of their departed relatives. The cultural significance of La Toussaint goes beyond religion as a time for unity and remembrance.
As a public holiday, La Toussaint provides a chance to take a break from the daily routine. Although rooted in Christian traditions, in recent years La Toussaint has taken on broader cultural importance, emphasising reflection, unity, and respect for the departed.
