Pedal power: why electric bikes are increasingly popular in France
Easier cycling, healthier living and eco -advantages help to propel electric bike riding forward
Nearly 3 million bikes were sold in France in 2021 – of which almost one-quarter were electric bikes. In French these are known as vélos électriques or vélo à assistance électrique.
Cycling has been popular for a considerable time, however, the recent awareness of its environmental benefits, the cost of energy and government financial support have given bike sales a further boost.
How is an electric bike different to other bicycles?
Both regular bikes and the electric types look very similar at a first glance, with the same wheels, handlebars and frames. There is a key difference though: electric bikes come with electrical components such as a battery pack, motor and even a display screen. The battery powers the motor, providing assistance whilst the rider pedals.
What types of electric bike are there?
There are three main types of electric bikes:
- Pedal Assisted bikes: These electric bicycles have a motor which functions when you are pedalling, helping to propel you forward. Some types have a throttle. Maximum speed: 25 kph.
- Throttle only e-bikes come with a motor controlled by a throttle – and do not require you to pedal. Simply turn the throttle and you are away! Maximum speed: 25 kph.
- Faster Pedal Assist electric bikes. Unlike the other two types, the maximum speed of these e-bikes is 45 kph. They are popular bikes for commuting and longer distances. They do though come with a more expensive price tag…
Is there financial support available to buy an electric bike?
Yes. The French government is keen to encourage a reduction in car use – with the aim of increasing the daily use of bikes from 3% at present to 9% by 2024[1]. In 2018, Le Plan Vélo was introduced. This year the financial incentive was increased; with a grant up to 4,000€ on offer for motorists replacing their car with a bike. Smaller grants are available for those who wish to buy a bike or e-bike. Some local and regional councils similarly provide assistance for buying cycles[2].
Do you need insurance to ride one?
Not necessarily. If you own a pedal assisted electric bike powered by a motor (max 250W) which cannot travel at faster than 25 kph, insurance is not necessary. Nevertheless it is recommended that you take out insurance cover for theft, damage and personal injury.
