Essential checks for camping cars to prevent frost damage and ensure spring readiness

In recent years, French people have embraced motorhomes – usually referred to as camping cars – with increasing enthusiasm. In 2025, more than 3,000 new motorhomes were registered, bringing the total number in France to 610,000[1]. However, as the temperatures drop and the winter weather starts to bite, it’s not too late for camping car owners to take essential steps now to protect their investment from the cold, damp, and potential damage of winter storage. Read more to discover our four top tips.

Tip 1: Water system drain-down: This is the most critical area for preventing costly frost damage. It’s absolutely essential to drain all water (tanks, boiler/heater, taps, shower, toilet flush), using compressed air if possible. Don’t forget to leave taps open to relieve any pressure.

Tip 2: Battery management: Think about disconnecting the main leisure battery and the engine battery, connecting them to a smart trickle charger indoors or removing them entirely for storage in a cool, dry place. Flat batteries are often the first casualty of winter.

Tip 3: Engine care: Top up the antifreeze and check the oil – a running engine is a protected engine. Note: antifreeze is extremely toxic for children and animals, so keep any opened bottles secure and stored safely.

Tip 4: Security measures: Ensure that you store it in a secure location – ideally a locked garage/storage facility. Also, use wheel clamps or tracking devices if stored outdoors.

We hope that you find these winter storage tips useful.
